Seasonal Affect Disorder (S.A.D.) In Alaska it has been established that there is a SAD rate of 8.9%, and an even greater rate of 24.9%[19] for subsyndromal SAD.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also known as winter depression, is a mood disorder whose sufferers experience normal mental health throughout most of the year, but experience depressive symptoms in the winter or, less frequently, in the summer, repeatedly, year after year. As stated by the U.S. National Library of Medicine:

"Some people experience a serious mood change when the seasons change. They may sleep too much, have little energy, and crave sweets and starchy foods. They may also feel depressed. Though symptoms can be severe, they usually clear up."[1]

The condition in the summer is often referred to as Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder, and can also include heightened anxiety[2].

Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Matthew's
THE POWER of PRAYER SHAWLS

Anonymous Stories from the Prayer Shawl Ministry

A young lady found out about our prayer shawl ministry and decided that she wanted to make one for her sister, who had just had a baby.

This same young lady had also been asked to be the godmother of this new baby. She went out and bought yarn and asked a friend to help

her get started. Then the work began on the shawl, even as she continued with her school and family obligations. It was comforting and quieting for her to work on the shawl when she was feeling overwhelmed. One of her school assignments involved memorizing biblical text and she did this as she worked on the shawl. Then she went to the baptism of the new baby and presented her sister with the shawl . . . And told her about the biblical text that had been studied and repeated during the creation of the shawl. The sister began to cry and revealed how that same biblical text had been very difficult for her during a crisis time in her life; and now she could see the healing of the text and the miracle of this new baby. This was a wondrous working of the Holy Spirit in the lives of both of these women, connected with a prayer shawl.

Early this summer I made a prayer shawl for a friend in Idaho who was having cancer surgery. She shared the idea of the shawl with

everyone in the hospital and her friends who asked about it. Now she is doing well and she called with the news that she has a 91 year old

friend who had fallen. She asked if I would mind if she shared her prayer shawl with this friend. Of course, I told her to do anything

that she felt was appropriate with the shawl. She said that she didn't want to give it away, but that her friend could benefit from

having it for awhile. She planned to go right over to the friend when we finished talking on the phone. And - so the ministry grows

wherever it is planted.

If you would like to participate in this prayer shawl ministry, ask in the church office and you will be given the contact information.
